I wouldn't go quite that far, but that's a good point, and it's also why I prefer the 3E portrayal of halflings. Hobbits in the LOTR trilogy aren't "heroic" in the sense of characters like Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli. Their virtues are the traditional English ones of endurance, determination, and perseverance.

The thing is that these qualities, while certainly admirable, are essentially _passive_ ones. Hobbits as a race, while they can absorb a lot of punishment, aren't particularly dynamic or charismatic. They're not larger than life the way an elf, dwarf or Dunadan is, or even a Rohirric cavalryman.

For a book, this isn't a problem, but it is a problem when you want to make up an adventuring race for an RPG. Adventuring is an active occupation, and if a race doesn't capture the imagination, they probably shouldn't be in the game, at least not as PCs.

I agree with Hong. Hobbits are okay, but they aren't really fit race for PC adventuring types. Unless something was forcing them, they didn't really want ot adventure.

I'm 28 and I prefer the 3ed Halflings so much so that I'm willing to allow people to play them in my campaign.

I never liked them in 1ed or 2ed. For the most part, they were not really Hobbits. Hobbits, save for the few we are introduced to in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (and I'm not including any -- assuming there were any -- from Tolkien's other, less popular, non-"literature" sources), they don't travel much, don't adventure, aren't prone to being thieves, and are damn-near invulnerable to anything requiring strength of will. I don't think we really see much of this in 1ed or 2ed. The nature of the game requires that people run around adventuring, so I don't know how these chaps managed.

I like Kender, although I've always hated them while they were being played in a campaign I ran. They were original and refreshing. Unfortunately, they were so original and refreshing that a lot of people continue to hate them to this day. I am pleased that 3ed D&D melded the better aspects of the Kender (fear resistance, Dexterity, SHOES) with the better aspects of the Halfling (.......).

Flexor, I'm not trolling nor am I trying to flame but I have to say this...

I've noticed in most of your comments that you don't really seem to like much of anything in 3ed... or 2ed. You seem fixated on 1ed in virtually every manner.

Why? I just have to know...

Thanks!

I have been playing D&D for about 20+ years (most as a DM). I like the new 3e Halfling just fine. One of the players in my Forgotten realms Campaign plays a Halfling Rogue "Fisley Griblingtine" and is the most entertaining character in the group so far.
The Halfling Racial Traits in the PH are very feasable and well suited, right down to their 3/4 carrying capacity.
Just my opinion.

I'll second that. Why do you even play 3E, my friend? We dig it, that's why we post here.

Well I never played 2e, but as for Halflings. I prefer the Hobbits instead of the small model thin gypsy look. Just a matter of preferance. Neither one comes up much in my game as nobody ever wants to play any kind of halfling, new or old. So I just left the furry footed little blighters as they have been in the past. Didn't see much reason to drastically change them into Kender lite. Not that I have anything against Kender, Tas was always fun in the first DL trilogy.

No halflings in my home-brew 3E world, and only partly because of the 3E treatment of them. I have 3 distinct cultures of elf, 2 of dwarf, 1 of gnome. I didn't do halflings because a) no room for them and b) didn't want to write-up anymore cultures. Also, there are no orcs (as i duck for blaspheming). There are just goblinoids. In my world, goblin, hobgoblins, and bugbears are of the same race, just of various sizes. There are currently 4 distinct groups of goblins, one is which is quite civilized and trying to co-exist with the humans and demi-humans.

However, there is a lot of unexplored turf. Sometime, 3E halflings, and a more 1E-ish flavor may show up. Just not now. I'm intrigued by a ravenous band of munchkin raiders, but have done that theme with Pixies/brownies/ other fey.
