This is called sampling. For better or worse, it's done all the time.

*snip*

Yes, but this is a self-sampling survey, with other limitations (internet access, knowledge of the site) that make this less than a scientific survey. All it describes are those at EN World that cared enough about the topic to participate.

Polls are, unfortunately, for entertainment purposes only (although one could gain consensus on rules questions and use that as evidence in making an in-game rules interpretation).

Well I'm 22 and I much prefer the new halflings to the old. I never would consider playing a halfling in the older editions, but I have and will continue to do so in 3e. And appartently I was the only person who liked to play kender. Go figure. :)

Kender rule! All my friends will tell you that I'm more kender than I'm human....Just ask them.
My favorite Kender was a ranger named Sprocket. He doesn't even remember his own name anymore because his friends the Tinker Gnomes keep having to revive him after he destroys one of their experiments.
Sort of like Dee Dee from Dexters Lab.

I like 1st Edition & 3rd E. Both versions of the game I love. I'm an old timer but I consider the current incarnation of D&D to be mine just as much as any new players out there. I don't like the new halflings.

Hobbit 3E

I have been listening to The Fellowship of the Ring unabridged audiobook and thought this might best represent hobbits in the 3E way. If not otherwise mentioned, they're the same as standard 3E halflings, and I can't be bothered to do height/weight charts :).

-2 Str, +2 Wis, +2 Cha. Hobbits aren't noted for their agility; in fact one is said to be quite clumsy, but most people seem to like them and they are undeniably sensible.

+8 racial bonus on Move Silently. Tolkein says no one can hear a hobbit if he doesn't want to be heard. No bonus on Climb or Jump.

+4 to saves vs. mind-effecting effects and no +1 luck bonus to all saves. Hobbits aren't said to be lucky, but they more than anyone else are able to resist the call of the Ring, and Gandalf says several times how strong they are.

Favored Class: Expert.

Well, I don't want to get too deep in a discussion on polling methods because... Well because it's not all THAT interesting. :) hehe. I submit this to you, however;

If someone cares about this subject so little that they are too lazy to click YES or NO, is their opinion all that vital to this poll? I would say no. It would just pad the results.
Which, I would think, would just hurt the results for the Old Halfling. After all, if they are on a 3E site, they're playing 3E, and they don't care enough to do the poll, odds are they'd choose the 3E halfling.

As for the limited scope of the poll, the people on the net are simply a loud minority of the players, we all know that. But the results can be telling, interesting, and not necessarily irrelevent.
As a rule of thumb, never take any poll result as a universal truth.

That's right, fight the stereotype. :) I may prefer the new halfling, but it's nice to see that the preference bears little relation to a person's age.

I'm almost afraid to ask, how young were you when you started playing D&D? I'm about six years older than you and I started around 11. 2nd Edition wasn't the easiest thing in the world to play for an 11 year old with ADD. ;)
