Once again, the "it's tradition" call is being raised regarding the dislike of the 3e halfling.
The fact is, in the older books, halflings weren't all hobbit-esque. To me, calling for "traditional" halflings would call for the old halflings as mentioned earlier in this thread... the ones by Jeff Dee and Willingham were not very "hobit" like, and were much more in line with the 3e halfling than with the 1e / 2e halflings.
Tradition doesn't enter into it. Traditionally, halflings were a confused lot, different in style from module to sourcebook.
