How about Artifacts?

I see the threads and the interest in magic items, but how about Artifacts and Relics?

Ari Marmell and others many of us should recognize got together with Necromancer Games and put this together:

Book of Artifacts

Check it out. The relics have good histories that can help flesh out campaigns with stories and campaign histories. Plus Artifacts and Relics have always made for good adventures in my experiences.

I so want this book.

I need some decent artifacts to possibly suppliment my PCs need for magic items. Scaling artifacts is easier to do so, in some ways.

I was originally hoping for some more content around using artifacts in the game, crafting artifacts, etc., but even so I'll check this book out, since I love artifacts so much :D

Well, each individual artifact does have a section of its entry specifically devoted to adventure/campaign hooks. Does that qualify?

I agree, like this!

I once ran the Rod of Seven Parts with a homebrew module. In my campaign I had a mystic cataclysm in the ancient past that caused the world's magic to drop from what sustained level 10+ spells to the normal 9th level spell they were used to. It was called the 'Decline of Magic'

A party needed to save a companion from an evil magic sword that was draining his life. (PC fighting a Death Knight told the DK, "You'll serve me in Hell!" as he hit him. The DK replied, "Truer words were never spoke." then thrust his sword through the PC's torso and died. The party was able to get the sword out of the PC but a week later he lost a point of Con. They check the chest they had the sword in and the bottom of the chest was covered in blood. :] )

The party went to a Ki-Rin and it told them it would help if they accepted a geas to not kill anyone during the quest for the Staff of Life. They did, it gave them the first piece and they were off. They travelled through several of the TSR campaign worlds, including Lankhmar, and one person was killed along the way so a different character was dieing along with the original PC slowly losing his life. It certainly added impetus to the proceedings.

They ended up going to the future of my world, then bounced ot the past and saw this uber-lich they had just seen themselves battling in the future taking the Staff of Life to try and power some evil artifact! All that was sticking out of the thing was the portion of the staff that was the final piece. They ran over, touched their end of the staff to what was in the thing and it melded to theirs while causing the 'Decline of Magic' to occur.

The party saved their comrade, the other PC was okay since the geas was lifted and the PC that got the full Staff retired. It was a good run. :)

Then there was the time the party took the Mighty Servant of Leuk-O to a geostationary orbital dungeon and reprogrammed it into the Mighty Servant of the Druids. The PC that got that went off on the enforced quest to restore all the damage to the world's forests that had been caused by Leuk-O.

Artifacts can be fun. ;)
