How big is your world?

IMC, the "civilised" lands are about 400 miles E-W, 600 miles N-S, with a desert to the south and sub-arctic "scandinavian" lands north. On the West is the ocean, East a big mountain range. There's about the same amount of land on the other side of the mountains and south of the desert, but the PCs know nothing about them and I haven't developed them much, yet.

  • Trinalia (by Homebrew): The continent itself is about the size of South America, though much of the action occurs on isles in the nearby seas, extending it out about as far as the carribean goes in the real world.
I've also mapped the other major continent, though only the SE portion of it is defined, about the size of eastern Asia, including China, Japan, SE Asia, and the island nations such as Malaysia and Indonesia.
  • My second world game is, of course, about 2 x earth sized. Probably closer to 1.5 if you consider that while almost the whole earth is defined, only America is mapped out in any great detail, though the party has already visited second world Japan and a second world europe/balkans trip is in the works. Of course, anywhere in first world Earth is a possibility.

It's 780x1020 (e/w, n/s). Roughly the size of the western United States or an area covering the British Isles and France. It's based around a large Inner Sea so much of the mapped world is water.

The primary working area for the campaign will be 260x170 (e/w, n/s). I've decided that while I like to know there's more beyond the borders of what I have mapped in a campaign world, and even know a fair amount of what's out there, I really prefer to keep a campaign on a smaller-than-continent-sized scale.

Crescent is about the size of Europe, turned 90 degrees counter-clockwise and bent around the Mediterranian a bit more.

It's the only (known) continent on the world. Which may or may not be flat. No one knows. There may or may not be other continents. If someone does know, they aren't telling.

The 13 Kingdoms, being a DM-independant type Living-style setting, needed a lot of room. The setting is about 5,000x5,000 miles. Not sure how that compares to Earth continents. (Most of that is wilderness, but the maps show it all).

Definitely a place for multiple campaigns.

Well, I have 3 different homebrews. All different sizes. The smallest is only about 4 hours walk in all directions.. so just over 3 an a half square miles around. Very localized and centered around one main town. The reason for this is because this is just a short, 12 session game that I'm running for some friends who are home for the summer from college. Once they leave, the campaign will be done if all timing goes well.

The middle sized homebrew is roughly the size of New York State. It would take about two months for a character to walk 'edge' to 'edge' of this island/continet/world. Its also localized but in a regional sense. There are only three kingdoms/governments and the events are all around them, not global.

The largest is about the size of the entire east coast. (Or around the size of the Japanese Islands if you want to get fancy) It is not localized like the other two but has many governments and organizations. If it was not for water travel, movement across land would take several months. It was created to host many campaigns in and function kinda like a living world.

Eh, I run Planescape. So that's infinity, multiplied by several times. The interesting parts are scattered all around, with the distance between them usually impossible to describe as a number. Sorry. :p

not sure you tell me

How big is your world? I'm not asking for the diameter of the planet, but rather how big is the setting of your campaign?

The Greyhawk campaign setting is about the size of Real World Europe. The Forgotten Realms is a really big continent?

How big is your homebrew setting? (Can you describe it's size in relation to the Real World?)

Is your setting a place to support multiple campaigns? Or do you change settings with each new campaign?

I started working on this world in 1991, and started playing on it in 94. Its my homebrew world called Darkaria.

Below is a link to a site I use to post thing, have a look for yourself, I just posted it. Check it out and give me soe feedback, the maps is 8160 miles from top to bottom, and 8640 miles from left to right. Its going to take a few to load, on dialup.

You mean for England/Scotland/Wales? Well, Britain, really...
Yeah, that's probably it. I'm not sure I've ever heard it applied to the entire island, but I can't think of another term for it. The dictionary isn't very clear on it either, referring to Britannia as the name the Romans used for the portion of the island they occupy, and modern usage to refer to both the main island, as well as smaller related islands (Isle of Man, Wight, the Orkneys, the Shetlands, etc.) and Northern Ireland.

In my haste to answer the first questions, I entirely missed this follow-up question. In theory, I could use the same setting for more than one campaign. In fact, I might even be tempted to do so down the line. However, I tend to be a bit flightly, so I'm more likely to start a new setting. I've got three or four recurring ideas that bounce around in my head, but by the time I get around to executing them, it's always a bit different.
