How big is your world?

There are four main continents and a "sub-continent" that are all attached to each other, much in the was that Eurasia was all connected at one point before continental drift gave us the continents that we have today. So, take Europe, Asia, African, and India and smash them all together and you've got the World of Samoth's "World Continent" (a misnomer, but, hey, what do they know?). :)

Absolutely - it is intended to support multiple campaigns. I've been working on it since December 1988 but only actually started using it as a real campaign setting in May 2001 with the 3E rules.

Currently, the group has only been exposed to two small areas: southern Esoria ("Spain") and northern Verundhi ("India"). There was travel along the way between the two, but the majority of the trip was made via magical teleportation so they didn't get to explore much.

Future campaigns will take place in different areas of the world and during different time periods.

The only known continent is about the size of Australia, a bit bigger maybe, and with a more regular shape, but it's pierced by an inner sea (which is infinitely deep, as it connects to the Elemental Plane of Water).

The world is a poorly disguised Mars, with different surface geography. relatively large central island/continent (about half the size of Australia) surrounded by a larger ring-shaped continent. Peaceful see inside the ring. Outside the ring is less-well defined, but with roughly half of the land unknown in the current campaign. Lots of water (mostly seas).

Is it big enough for multiple campaigns? Yep! I'm running my second game in the same world now, and except for some early WEG Star Wars games, every game I have ever run has been set inside the larger meta-universe (metaverse?) that Aeres and it's two moons inhabit.

Weird -- I've also always had a Mars fetish. I've been developing off and on a campaign setting that is loosely based on Mars too, but I actually embrace some aspects of the Martian environment, notably the cold red deserts, devoid of significant life (although I do need some scrubby brush of some kinds to serve as a base for the food chain; otherwise there's nothing to do but go outside and battle the environment, which makes for a boring game). The game I'm actually running took another old idea of mine; that of a fragmented world of floating islands, ala the first Deathgate novel, but I'm actually pulling back from that idea again, and after this campaign wraps up, I'll go back to my more traditional geography.

Actually, I'm also thinking of lifting significant portions of the geography directly from the Tarim and Junggarian basins -- the home of the TaklaMakan desert, the Tien Shan Mountains, the Jade Gate, Tibet and Bactria just on the perimeter and Siberia and the Gobi not far from there. It's already got a dessicated, Mars-like feel to it, and I don't have to make up anthing else significant in terms of geography if I don't want to. It also gives me that kinda fun "frontier" feel, although with two big empires that influence the region from a distance ("China" and "Persia", although I'm not borrowing anything more than the geography itself, my empires are not direct calques of any real-world cultures.)

All things considered I'd have to say that my campaign world is slightly larger then Earth. Most adventures have taken place on Eras, which is about as big as North America. Other adventures have taken place on the Dark Continent (similar to Africa). I have run an entierly independent campaign in Cathay which is on a large continent that I have yet to name. There is another continent to the south of Cathay thats aprox. the size of Australia, and two contients smaller then NA and SA. Though I have yet to detail it there is an unnamed contienent on the bottom of the world.

My campaign world is large enough in both spacial and temportal directions to support numerous independent campaigns.

The main region detailed for Urbis is about 5,000 x 3,500 miles - you can see the first map drafts here.

There's more to the world - including some information on the other planets in the same solar system (some of them do have human colonies), but this region, which is roughly analogous to Europe, Northern Africa, and West Asia, is the main focus of the setting.

Is your setting a place to support multiple campaigns?

Well, since I plan to publish Urbis one day, I certainly hope so... ;)

I'm currently working on a new world. I have 2 fairly developed homebrews, but i'm not really happy with them because the kingdoms and such just seem to large to me.

My new campaign has two maps, one is a large island area where I'm going to set the campaigns, and will be home to the standard generic stuff. That map is about 800 by 1000 miles.

Then I have a large world map which for now will just be an outline of the major continents and that coveres an area 8000 by 10000 miles. I'm going with an infinite flat world for my material plane, so this is a theoretically small portion of it, but it should still give me plenty of room to work with.

I have several but I list the main ones.

Current is 1700X1200 or so miles. Actual campaign takes place on about 1/2 that. The rest is uncivilized wildlands and unexplored.

Last one was 2 miles by 2 miles. Mostly took place in a mountain pass town with forays outside that area at the most 10 miles.

One before that was 300X500 or so. Was a old kingdom with mountains seperating it from the frontier/newly settled lands. Sort of like a british/new colonies thing with the mountains serving the purpose of the sea to seperate the "colonies" from the Old world.

The current one has had 2 campaigns in it. The Last one had 2 campaigns in it. and the last had 3 campaigns in it.

Later

The 'known world' (or at least the mapped portion thereof) to the culture/cultures that the players are part of is about 1500 by 1000 miles. The continent is about the size of asia, but turned so it goes north/south in its longest dimension. The northern-most part is near the north pole, and the southern-most part is a little bellow the equator.

Since I've put so much effort towards the history of my world, I've ended up with many, many places for new campaigns to fit in. The current (and first) campaign is taking place at the very tail end of my timeline, so there's about 10,000 years in which other campaigns could take place.
