Don't tell him that it's a vein of 'fools gold'. Encourage him to go in a good long way. Then collapse the entrance. Go back to town to start spreading rumors and stories about how people were tricked by the fools gold up in that mine. (This should discourage other folks from trying to track down the mine.)
Greed isn't exactly defeated but he is out of circulation for a while.
