How close was/is your AD&D1 gaming to using the Rules As Written?

Remember: ignoring/omitting rules counts as House Rules.

And don’t anybody start with the old “the rules are guidelines” crap. <glares sternly>

I voted ~50%. Most of the "house rules" consisted in ignoring significant amounts of the RAW (level limits, weapon vs. armor type, helmet rules, facing, etc.). The only major modification we used was to substitute B/X style initiative for the 1e initiative system. We also incorporated a significant number of homebrewed spells and magic items over time.

Well, rules are more like suggestions. :)

I voted about half. I remember trying the weapon types vs Armor rule only a few times. It became too tedious to keep track of. Since the modifier was for actual armor rather than AC there was more baggage than use for this rule. A beastie might have an AC of 3 but should its hide be considered plate, leather, or what?

Every encounter turns into phone sex chat. " So, what is he/she/it wearing?"

What is the helmet rule for those of us who never played 1e?

The helmet rule stated that any suit of armor is assumed to come with a helmet which provides AC equal to the armor type. 10% of attacks will be aimed at a helmeted head. If a helm is not worn, then intelligent opponents will target the head 50% of the time.

I voted mostly. We didn't use weapons vs AC (tried for a bit but it sucked) and we didn't always bother with the intricacies of initiative. But other than that, we played pretty much RAW.

"Mostly".

The rules I ignored were the racial limits and racial class restriction rules, as well as STR limitations for women. I also used a different initiative system. Other than that I used weapon speed modifiers, weapon versus armor modifiers, etc...

Hmm? Granted, I'm going strictly from memory, here, (my book is at home), but I thought it was:

You have to buy a helmet (they were priced separately in the book) to wear. And if no helmet was worn, 1 in 6 attacks would be directed at the AC 10 head (or 1 in 2 from intelligent enemies).

ExploderWizard, are you sure about your statement?
