D&D 5E How dangerous is a chimera?

About the sage, we only have access to farmers and each say a different thing. But they could sell us a sheep to create some sort of trap... if we can persuade the paladin to allow the sheep to be sacrificed :erm:

There's an alternative if the paladin doesn't want to waste that much mutton on the hoof: use the paladin as the bait !

Thanks everyone for the replies!

About our group, there are four of us, all 3rd level. We don't actually need to kill the beast, but we need enough blood to fill a vial. I was thinking about a dragon's dogma chimera (oops, looks like I can't post links here), so flying and fire-breathing is bad :-S
We do have a ranger however, and my character can use a short bow.

Btw, I have to google what's a leroy jenkins lol but no, that's not our style. We usually are WAY careful!

And great tale, Arcshot! Let's hope ours have a happier ending! :D

Speak to it in Draconic and try to flatter its dragon nature. Offer it food and treasure in exchange for some of its blood. If it agrees, then you don't need to worry about fighting it.

I think the cleric speaks draconic! I'm not sure we have anything a chimera would see as treasure, but maybe if we give enough sheep... or the paladin, as Lackhand suggested :D
But those elves are just skin and bones, I'm not sure it would be a good offering.

The ranger's player want to kill it, but my character isn't that confident. A thing this big can probably eat a halfling in just one bite.

Speaking to a chimera can be tricky. Best to avoid words with more than one syllable.

First hunt down some stirges and take their hypo-noses. Attach them to arrows with vials on them and strings tied to the vials. You'll probably have disadvantage on the attack roll since they won't fly straight, but if you hit you should get at least half a vial per arrow.

How to trap a Chimera
1. Find out the region it hunts most regularly.
2. Seek out a defensible locale in that region, ideally a crenallated tower with arrow slits.
3. Equip non-casters with longbows. Get riding horses for everyone.
4. Make a false sheep decoy with real fleece and sheep's blood.
5. Lace the decoy with potent knock-out poison.
6. Wait.
7. Take a vial of its blood while it's knocked-out.
8. Ride away fast on those riding horses you brought.
9. Profit.
