How did you get into D&D?

When I was a kid I loved to make things with clay, especially different kinds of critters. One day when we were out at a used book sale I found the 1E Monster Manual and really liked the looks of some of the monsters in it and got my parents to buy it for me. As I went through the book seeing what I wanted to make in clay I got intrigued by all the information about the critters and wondered what all those stats ment. Soooo next time we went to a book sale I was lucky enough to find more D&D books, mostly 1st edition and things took off from there. :)

A better Alternative to the 3 Amigos

One summer, my little sister, who is much younger, got really into watching the Three Amigos. She would insist on watching at least once day, and there was no guarantee she wouldn't continue insisting unless the TV was off. So this doomed, my brother, myself, and our little sister's babysitter to a TVless summer.

In order to survive, the babysitter, who was a great deal older than my brother and I, taught us how to play Dungeons and Dragons and ran a Greek themed campaign with my brother, myself, and her little brother as the only pcs. She went off to college at the end of the summer, leaving me as the neophyte DM.

And that's how it all started. I do not know, but I may be the only one of us who still games. The others stuck with it for a long time, but I think they just ran out of opportunities.

i friend of mine got the basic set one summer and wanted to test this weird new game out. i just remember using the d20, not to see if we hit the stirges, but to see how many stirges we hit!

I received this as a christmas gift from my mother.

The Neibhood kids introduced it to me in the early 80's and then I got the red box set for Christmas a year later. I really don't think my parents had any idea what they were getting me into. :D

When we played, we had no DM. We had random table to determine what monsters were in the room, what treasure they had, and what doors were in a room.

I'm one of the classic, "my older brother got me an AD&D PHB and DMG for Xmas one year" types :)

I was a bout 10 years old, and I saw a thing on the news about a game that made Heavy Metal Kids kill themselves and/or worship the Devil.

I was sold.

About 17 years ago (I was in 5th grade, I think), I was sick, and my mom brought me home my uncle's D&D Basic set (the magenta colored box). Eventually, I got some friends from school to play, and the rest is history...

When I was in 4th grade, someone brought D&D (one of the boxed sets) in during the last week of school. I was handed a character sheet on a 3x5 index card with stats that I didn't understand and a list of equipment. After just a few minutes of a typical 4th grade hack and slash, I was hooked. I picked up a boxed set right away.

When I started middle school (6th grade), I had to walk across the street to the high school and wait for my father, a teacher, to take me home. Luckily, some of his high school seniors stayed after and used his room to play 1st Edition AD&D. They took pity on me and I was able to play for about 90 minutes a day for almost a year with the "big" kids. I learned a lot and I'm still thankful that they let someone so much younger join their game.
