How did you get your start

After making friends with my now best friend, he asked if I wanted to play D&D and he would DM me. I had no idea what D&D was but I knew it had to do with fantasy stuff, so I was in. I'll never forget my first minute of playing after creating my character:

Him: So you're standing in a bar having a few drinks at the counter, what do you want to do?

Me: Huh? What do you mean I'm standing at a bar? (I didn't see pictures or anything on our gaming table)

Him: Your character is standing at the bar drinking. What do you do?

Me: I don't get it. Are you asking what my character wants to do?

Him: Yes.

Me: Uh...ok....he starts jumping up and down.

Him: Heh, uhm ok...you start jumping up & down in the bar and everyone starts looking at you.

Me: Ohhhhhhh I get it...I imagine what's going on and you tell me what happens!

An hour after realizing how D&D works, my character has killed a drunk thug, threw him out my room window, & figured out a way to leave the inn without anyone seeing me leave. After that I was hooked :p

When I was really young, probably around 7 or 8... one of my uncles taught me and my cousins to play Magic: the Gathering (first in a line of CCG's).

That makes me feel old. Even though I'm not.

It makes me realize that for the younger generation, it is possible that they played MtG before ever playing D&D. That's a sobering thought.

QFT. I'm barely 30 but I still remember when MtG appeared and almost immediately we lost two of our regular players to a freakin' card game!

Hm. Still a bit bitter, apparently.

*didn't need MtG to enjoy D&D*

It killed my income though. MtG that is.

Shemmy,

You sure there weren't any fiends involved? ;)

Blackleaf made me do it.

Nah, it really happened because I was wailing on this nerdy outcast kid who dropped his bag of dice while I laughed at him with several of my posse, so I took them and his lame book. I went on to play D&D, he went on, I think, to heroin.

That's entirely a lie. ;) I started when the football team's star running back invited me when he saw me reading the books in class
