If one wanted to take it to the logical conclusion, you could sunder a staff that is enchanted as a weapon, but not a spell-staff. You can sunder a rod of alertness, but not a rod of cancellation etc etc.
Weapons are often used to defend against the blow of an attacker's weapon. Thus, following this line of logic, they are (often) used to block the attack of the opposiing weapon and not moved to avoid that attack. The weilder of a wand would must certainly not attempt to block sword blows with the wand, but move it out of the way to avoid its destruction.
