How do Good Infernal Pact Warlocks work?

Obviously they're using the 'bad' magic to do good, but how and why would someone do that?

Because they can? Although in the case of Tieflings I'd probably house rule that they don't exactly have an Infernal Pact, but rather get their power from their curse.

I'm planning on running a LG Tiefling Paladin that multiclasses to Infernal Pact Warlock with just that idea. The powers he gets from the multiclass are his race/curse popping up, not something he desires.

There are some that would argue that the powers of evil possess abilities that the powers of good do not; to truly fight them, one must become one with them. The end of doing good justify the means of using evil powers to "even the playing field".

Others would argue that that the sacrifice made to the powers of evil to gain their powers strengthens them and that no matter the good done with those abilities, it can never equal the evil created by empowering such dark forces.

While some would seek to understand the forces of evil and merely explore those powers on an academic level. Their pact would be one of constant cost / benefit, weighing the cost to their soul against the potential gain of the power. This person is more likely unaligned however.

Read the fluff for Infernal warlocks. It says that a race of devils created the pacts, but Asmodeus destroyed them and wiped their names from mortal memory. "But you study their perilous secrets anyways."

So really you're just tapping into the deals, the packets of power, that those devils forged long ago.

You know how you steal someone's cable or internet? Just tapping into their cablebox/plugging into an outlet, running a wire to yours, and tada, you're leeching off their system? Same deal, except with arcane power.

A "Good" warlock might believe that there's a finite source of this power, and by using it for "Good", it's being used up so some evil warlock or devil can't take advantage of it. Or it could be seen as putting Hell's resources to good work, tieing up some of their power that they can't use to do something bad.

"Fighting fire with fire" is ancient wisdom.

"Tricking the Devil" and stealing his power (or his musical instrument) is just about as old a story.

The idea of curses that turn into cool powers is at least as old as the X-Men.

It's a good story. That's why we keep telling it.

They are Cursed with Awesome? Could be a way to handle it...
