How do I play a DOS game on Widows XP?

Has anyone ever tried to get MechWarrior 3 running on any of these platforms? I've never had any luck getting it to run on a post-Windows 2000 computer, and it's one of my very favorite games.

What version?

A non-3dhardware enhanced version should be just fine to play. The hardware specific ones (Nvidia or 3DFX), well, you're probably screwed.
