How do Rogues and Rangers hide during combat?

It is all with the skills that one rogue could disappear from plain sight in combat. That, in my opinion, is the spirit of the skills as listed.

Magical enhancements only add to the fun.

The section on Hide in the PHB (pg.69) quite clearly spells out how to hide in combat.

"If your observers are momentarily distracted (as by a Bluff check; see below), though, you can attempt to hide. While the others turn their attention from you, you can attempt a Hide check if you can get to a hiding place of some kind. (As a general guideline, the hiding place has to be within 1 foot per rank the character has in Hide.) This check, however, is at –10 because you have to move fast.

Creating a Diversion to Hide: You can use Bluff to help you hide. A successful Bluff check can give you the momentary diversion you need to attempt a Hide check while people are aware of you."

So no distraction, no hiding. Simple.

Would combat count as a distraction? Say, if the rogue's in a combat, but is not specifically engaged, but all other people that she wanted to hide from were?

I would think it would. We *seem* to do that in our game, but I've never actively attempted to Hide during play, and I'm the main Sneaky Guy (something about being the secondary tank, too...it's a rough life...).

I don't think it would count by itself. They might/should suffer a penalty to their Sense Motive and Spot checks though.

I'd say that having someone swing a sword at one's head is pretty distracting. :) Using a Bluff check is given as an example, not as the only mechanism for distractions.

If you can get out of sight, you can hide. Therefore, you can can run around a corner and hide. The next round, you can sneak attack from behind your corner or after sneaking out?!? It makes little sense to me, but that is what I think is possible, by the rules.

I don't think so. The people watching you actually have to take their eyes off you for a moment. That's why the bluff skill is usable in combat, because just being in combat isn't enough of a distraction. Plus, with no facing in 3e, everyone has eyes in the back of their heads ;)
