Ok, so we have 4 defenses- ac, ref, fort, and will- I understand that these are the targets the villains need to hit- but how do we save vs. the on going effects?

Roll 1d20.

1-9: Failure
10-20: Success

Some monsters give you a minus on that, some stuff gives you a small bonus on that, but usually not much, AFAIK.

Cheers, LT.

another saving throw question.

dwarven racial abilities give them a "+5 save vs poison" is this only against ongoing poison effects?

they also get a "saving throw" to avoid being knocked prone. how does that work?

Yes it's only the ongoing portion of the attack which is usually all the poison is. Considering no other modifiers a dwarf will make his/her poison save on a 5+ on a d20 roll.

This is an immediate save, so if an attack would knock the dwarf prone, he/she can make an immediate d20 roll and on a 10+ the dwarf is not prone, although all other effects including damage for the attack still apply.

The same. 10 or higher results in not going prone.
