How do you add more combat to a campaign?

A war is a good excuse for lots more combat, but doesn't shut out role playing opportunities if done right. There are after all endless amounts of political bickering and back stabbing going on with both sides, especially if allies are involved in the war. To add some more RPing you could perhaps throw in a subplot where there is some kind of resistance movement going on in the opposite side's camp. So then they have to figure out if it's for real as well as all the dangers of making contact, etc ... Not to mention that (contact) is RBDM in his own right.

Create several groups of recurring villians and their henchmen/followers. The PCs will have made some enemies during their adventures, even if they are not aware of it themselves.

Once the PCs are aware that there are several groups who are opposed to them and find that diplomacy fails (some of the groups may negotiate a truce with false promises and then break them later). Then the PCs will probably want to deal with these enemies if this is possible.

However, if the enemies of the PCs can find a way to work together against the PCs - then this could lead to many conflicts and tough battles. With the PCs fighting to defend their lives, as well as all they have worked towards to achieve.

By this I mean - if the PCs have help build a church, saved a village from attack, etc then the enemies of the PCs will first of all put their efforts in to undoing the good that the PCs have achieved and hold dear. Before finally attempting to destroy the PCs themselves.
