How does your group usually divide up the plunder? Do you actually divide the loot into (roughly) equal shares, between magic items and gold? Do you hold a sort of "auction" system for the items? Or is the hardware usually just dispensed out to whoever can best make use of it without regard to the value of the item, the gold tossed into the communal gold pile, and the consumables spread out among the party?

Ad hoc. We actually got into somewhat of a heated arguement last week when splitting treasure, because the old guard, ( original party members ), used to total the value then everybody got or was supposed to get an equal share. The new guys are more like, Eh, whatever. Then somebody wanted something specific and somebody wanted just gold.

I still think the best way is if everybody just picks from the list and what's left is sold or kept in party treasure. The group I play with that does that has never had an arguement about treasure, though certainly they have tried to make sure they get certain items instead of someone else.

We mostly just see what people can use and sell the rest, though keeping back some loot or looting while the others are away / not looking does happen :)

Need before Greed. We try to split up the loot to give it out to whomever it should most logically go to. Any cash loot is totaled and split evenly.

If more then one person could use the item in question, we try to give it to the character that has gotten fewer items. If all things are equal, we dice for it.

Rarely do we have to dice for it though, usually someone will agree that so-and-so could use it more...

The system we have is everyone rolls a die, highest gets to pick first, then it goes in descending order until it gets to the lowest, then back up in ascending order. It reduces the disparity between the first and last.

OTOH, sometimes if there's not much loot, we'll just let whoever wants stuff have it.

someone usually tallies the coin and gem values.

if we can carry it we also try and sell mundane armor, weapons, and equipment.

then the total is divided amongst the contributing party members. (if you missed the session and no one ran your character for you while you were away; no share)

magic items are divided separately. need and use basis mostly.

but we have so many magic items sometimes it is hard trying to get the players to take them for their characters.

diaglo left out the fact that his character usually manages to put aside a little something for himself.

Of course, he is a halfling thief . . . I mean ranger.

Mostly we put it into a group fund. Magic items and weapons are discussed until we reach a decision as to who is best suited to use them. We have two spellcasters and we've never argued over magic items. Weapons are pretty much divided equally, or given to whoever is in most need of something. Or given to whoever can use it best.

My group totals the apprased value of all of the items and then divide the loot up. If some one wants a magic item it is "bought" out of their share of the loot. If it is more expensive then their share the will owe the party the balance which is subtracted from their share next time. They also have an extra party share that is used for expensive consumables that the whole party uses are benfits the whole party such as expensive spell components, potions, and wands of cure spells, ect. The usual spells are things like stoneskin and others spells that are cast for the non spell casting members.

This works well because our group usualy makes their own items to fit their character concepts.
