Dunno if the poll is right for me. :)
I voted Despise little pewter people. As a matter of fact I ban them from my table. I don't like 3 dimensional representations of characters there.

However I do game with a map, and for purposed of helping visualize exactly where everything is, we use coins to represent the positions of the characters*. (and no the maps are not 1"/square scale).

This allows us to have a solid understanding of the battlefield, but no impact on the imagination of visualizing the character at the table.

*Note I said represent the position of the character, not represent the character. I think that mindset is important to the approach we take.

I want tactics but without minis. Mini rules are not suitable for realistic tactics. Although, yes, they can still provide a fine game experience, full of fun. But not suitable for me right now.

Minis are great for combat. They definitely help with the tactics and answer a lot of questions before they are asked.

However, the GM needs to be skillful in deciding when to use them. If you know there is going to be a fight in a tavern, do you map it and place minis when the characters walk in or do you simply describe it and map it and place minis when the action gets heated?

When I'm playing 3/4th D&D I use minatures. When I'm playing any other RPG, I don't. D&D with minatures is an excellent game; D&D without is a shoddy game surpassed by many other RPGs.

I spent 8 years hating miniatures and the last two weeks loving them.
i spent 36 years loving minis.

but i'm not a fan of the cheap plastic ones. although, they work in a pinch.

I like to use mini's for tactical situations (which means they get used for most combats). I like them for the visual reference they provide so everyone has a feel for the situation.

I used to never use them. I'd often have something like a dozen orcs in a 20'x20' room only to have a dozen pc's charge into the same room and a wild melee ensue. I like a healthy dose of realism in my games, so the scenario I outlined just doesn't make sense, especially once any other room contents start getting factored in.

So I started using mini's to get a sense of who and what can fit into those rooms more realistically.

Whatever do you mean? I see "despise." ;)

I must have been seeing things ;)

Seriously though, is there any way to edit polls after posting them? I've had that problem before, and I noticed someone had to do the same poll three times before he got it right.
