How do you like your elves best?

I went with Awesome and magical, but different games I've run have had them as:
fey and dangerous
space aliens mated with wolves (and other animals)
leet and twinky (not a 2E thing about that)

In my campaign elves are a pure npc race and they're fey, not humanoids.
So, I picked 'fey and dangerous'

I thoroughly enjoy elves in their "wild" format, the Grugach; silent, enigmatic, savage woodsmen that would rather kill you than look at you... reminds me a bit of the stereotypical old Native Americans.

A combination of the top four choices. I like my wood elves sylvan and rangery, my high elves arcane and refined, my wild elves feylike, and so on.

My personal favorites are the tragic Tolkien variety, but I like almost all of the other options - with the exceptions of space aliens and with teriyaki.

Elves IMC are arrogant and decedant, so secure in their power that they do not realize how much the world has changed since their civilization was at its peak.

They are also stagnant, only able to hold onto what they have through their magical power and mercenary/slave armies.

Basically, I'd prefer that elves be NPCs so that I can build elves as plot devices (with plots that last decades and centuries for the PCs to discover and either aid or hinder).

Me too. I have a race called changelings that have the statistics of D&D elves. They suffer from a limited form of madness related to the alien (elf) part of themselves.
