What is the official pronunciation of bulette? My friends insist it's boo-lay, since it appears to be french, but I think that sounds stupid and doesn't fit the beast at all... I prefer bullet.

The official pronunciation of Bulette is boo-LAY, which looks like french, as some misguided TSR staffer was trying to do obviously, but it's incorrect, as it would have to be spelled Bulet. As spelled, it should pronounced boo-LET, which is what I call it.

Many pronunciations according to Dragon Compendium, Vol. I:

boo-LET
byoo-LET
boo-LAY
byoo-LAY

It's been a while since I've seen one of these threads. I really think that WotC should have pronunciation guides in the Monster Manuals. There are quite a few monsters whose names are damn hard to figure out how to say them.

drow rhymes with cow

sounds more evil anyway, rhyming with grow is just boring

oh, gee, another drooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow

OMG a drow sorcerer run!

Now I think just the opposite, drow sounding like cow sounds silly to me and thus not frightening. Drow sounding like crow sounds more dark, menancing, and evil IMO.

But I've always known that I'm in the minority in this and I've live to accept that fact and be comfortable with it. :uhoh:

I always pronounced it to rhyme with row, but years ago -- Gen Con 1988! -- my friend (who pronounced it to rhyme with cow) and I cornered Gary Gygax in a bar and asked him. He said (somewhat apologetically, as he knew he was settling an argument), "I've always said 'drow' [cow]."

It's pronounced "Luxury Yacht."
Nice.

I pronounce it to rhyme with grow, because it sounds subterranean and menacing, whereas rhyming it with cow sounds like a venereal disease the party fighter picked up at the half-orc brothel.

However, "drow" is derived derived from "draugr" and is pronounced to rhyme with cow.
