How Do You Scan These Threads?

RSS Feed for the forums I like (RPG and Storyhour boards). That way I have an ongoing updated set of thread titles to look over without having to load a slow page. I use the Sage extension for Firefox.

I use Firefox, so I normally scan each page of threads with new content since my last visit, and open a thread that looks interesting in another tab; once I've gone through all of the pages of threads, I'll usually stop reading then go to the new tabs with new/updated topics, unless there's a specific thread that I want to see if there's been a reply to that I missed and/or didn't have time to reply to before, in which case I scroll back through the older, non-bumped threads, to see if I missed anything interesting.

I write a reply with no context, then I browse through hundreds of threads trying to find one where it would be (barely) relevant to the discussion.

I skim the titles of those threads that have been updated since the last time I visited. This is usually the first page for General, but often it can be two or three pages. I read those threads I think I might be intested in, but leave when I figure it isn't what I'm looking for which could be anywhere from one post to the end of the multi-page thread.

I do this in General, Rules, and House Rules.

But to answer:

I usually skim the first pages of Rules and General, occasionally going into Seeking Players and House rules, but only once a month or so for each. So , yes, I only see a fraction of Enworld.

I rarely look past the first page unless I am looking for a specific thread I want to post in. I don't Subscribe to thread ever.

Endless search

Why don't we have a search engine on this site that everyone could access? The amount of information on here is infinite & unmanageable without a search engine. Sometimes I spend hours skimming through hundreds of pages jus to find certain topics.

I scan the first two or three pages and read any thread which is not a grognard complaint-fest about the state of the game, as well as anything that's not about 4E. Anything else is fair game.

Because this site costs a cubic buttload (i.e. many thousand dollars a year) to run, and search is very CPU-intensive. Back when we were on the slow server searching ground things to a halt, so we instituted the $20 Community Supporter accounts to let people search (along with other cool benefits; who's online, custom titles, that sort of thing.)

Folks have been wonderful about keeping the community going; it's why the site is here. Without them, EN World wouldn't be here. Thanks, CSers!
