how does a basilisk reproduce?

I am going to throw a basilisk at one of my groups and I was wondering how this magical beast reproduces young. I am favoring the idea of having basilisks lay clutches of eggs and then incubating them for some amount of time. Or perhaps they lay eggs and leave the eggs behind immediately after laying them.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks.

I'm not sure, but I'm pretty sure bags or blinders are involved. Definitely no mirrors, though. ;)

Eggs sound about right, too.

IIRC, mythologically the basilisk and cockatrice are the same. They are hatched from rooster eggs. So, in our folklore, they don't reproduce. They are just odd mutations or some magical creation.

Don't forget about roosters-sodomites.
According to the folklore, this rooster egg must be warmed by hundred and one snakes.

well the snakes could heat it. They'd have to go outside and get warmed up and then come in and curl around the egg.

They'd be more like a heat transfer system than a heater. But it's magic.. maybe they're magical snakes.
