How does a PC play a minotaur?

Hi Everyone,

We're starting a new campaign soon and throwing around some ideas. One of the PCs wants to play a minotaur. I know that this race will level much slower than a core race, but I'm a little confused.

If a character is ECL 4, does that mean for every 4 levels of XP, he gains 1 level?

Additionally, where can I find something that will detail how to create a minotaur character?

Thanks! :)

Savage Species details the rules for playing monsters as characters. If the character is ECL 4, he's effectively a 4th-level character (with 6,000 to 9,999 XP). When he gains a total of 10,000 XP, he gains a new level.

I think minotaurs are much more than ECL 4, though.

They are ECL 8.

Indeed. Do NOT mix Challenge Rating (CR) and Effective Character Level (ECL).

One thing to add to CRGreathouse's post is that your Minotaur PC will be a 1st level character until he gets 36,000XP, at which moment he'll become 2nd level. He'll reach 3rd level at 45,000XP, 4th at 55,000XP, etc.

That's what I was looking for. I'm going to check out that article right now as well. Now just one more question:

Do you think these rules will change for 3.5? I don't want to give the PC the link you posted and have him start creating a character if it will be over/under balanced in the new version.

Thanks for all of your help!

You could also check out the
Minotaurs of Krynn
and see which one you is more suited to your game.

I think that using Both makes things interesting.

The Krynnish are obviously more advanced/evolved
and the MM version is more bestial.

IF you have access to the Feral (?) template from SS then you can widen the division even more, and/or present "throwbacks"

This also allows you to have Minotaurs with hooves and those with feet! ;)
