Dragons overanalyze
But we don't have to. The simplest explanation is sometimes the best.
Our sole NPC hero remaining, Silver, has lost within the last 24-48 hours the two most important things to him -- his mate, who he will never stop wanting to avenge, and the last heir to an enlightened fiefdom with which he has lived in peace for many years. To fight Red now would be foolhardy, but with the allegiance of the people, possible at a later date. But also he realizes that the loyalty of the village comes into doubt if another were to claim lordship there. The people now love Silver as their savior, but some meddling interloper with an ascot, three friends and a dog could mess it all up, and leave him totally isolated. He is guarding the vacancy until he can find a worthy lord for the village, who will honor the previous pact with the prior lord. This will allow him to seek the revenge he needs on the Red. So what did Red say? It didn't scare Silver, or intimidate or even pose embarassment, but it got him thinking:
"You don't seriously consider that you could defeat me, do you? Your mate is gone, your ally defeated. You are alone."
But at that moment Silver thought of the now defensless village he had sworn to protect, and the people who cheered him for his bravery in saving them, and realized:
'Alone? Perhaps not alone at all...'
