How does one make an entirely self-sufficient Wizard?

Lots of Charm spells. Charm Monster combined with some divinations can give you quite a few useful helpers. Lesser Geas, summoning spells and the various Planar Ally spells are also really good tools.

Wands of summoning spells are extremely handy. Not only does the low save DC not apply to summoning spells, but using them also won't break invisibility.

I agree with the idea of taking a few levels of something other than Wizard.

A couple of levels of Fighter or even Monk would make some sense, give better hitpoints and allow the character to fight a bit more effectively.

I'm currently playing a Monk 4 / Wizard 3 in an FR game. Sure, there are some trade-offs of this kind of multi-classing. I can't cast as high of level spells as I could if I was a single class Wizard. Not as effective in combat as a single classed Monk. But I'm fairly happy with the character as an experiment. He can do just about anything!

Heck, I'm 7th level and have a +11 Will Save without help from magic items. How cool is that?

By 15th level this character will either be Monk 6 / Wizard 9 or Monk 4 / Wizard 11. Haven't decided yet.

If nothing else, run the numbers and see how you'd like the character as a Fighter 2 / Wizard 13, or Fighter 2/Rogue 3/Wizard 10 or various combinations.
