How does one make PDFs and make them avalible for download?

Hello.

I'm interested in making PDF files of d20 materiel and then posting it for FREE!. My questions are:

1) I don't know how to turn word files (which is what I'll be using) into PDF files. MInd that they're going to be free so I'm not planning on spending much money on a PS to PDF program.

2) Once I have the PDF file how can I get it to be linked so that people can download it freely?

Thanks.

There are, no doubt, better qualified people who can answer these questions however I figured I'd provide you with a relative newbies (me being the newbies) opinion.

From what I understand, the creation of the PDF isn't the greatest difficulty. Adobe provides a free service through its website (although I think you can only create a few PDF's that way) IIRC, there are even free Print to PDF programs out there.

However, creating it is only half the problem. Once created, the only way you can edit it is by using Adobe Acrobat (the full version, not the free Reader). Since the conversion to PDF doesn't necessarily always take into account precise settings of Word documents (AFAIK), this facility is greatly needed in order to make your PDF's conform to your desired look and preferences.

Programs like InDesign and QuarkXpress have the in-built ability to 'Print to PDF' and these programs are designed (or, more accurately, the reverse) so that their settings are kept and the resulting PDF needs little or no editing in Acrobat.

My recommendation to you is therefore that you consider what exactly you wish to accomplish with your work. Do you wish it to be of a professional level or do you just want to share your work with others through the PDF format? In the case of the latter, I'd just use the free PDF options and not really worry about whatever niggling inconsistancies crop up on the resulting PDF. In the case of the former... well... a professional uses professional tools, so fork over the cash for the tools :)

As for linking the file... well, it's like any file. You'll need webspace somewhere and you just upload it and use a link. If it's free, I'm not sure how RPGNow works with that (although I think you have to be a vendor to have the option of giving freebies whilst using their servers), but I'm guessing you'll have to just get some Geocities/Angelfire space and just link it like you would any other file for download.

pdf995 makes a little banner-ware program for the cheapskate in all of us. Even if you buy it its $20 or so. The program looks like a printer to you. When you have your word document (or whatever) done you just "print" to it and it creates a pdf for you. I've found it to not be as trim as some Adobe pdfs but it definitely gets the job done quickly and cheaply.

Posting them is another matter. Any of the free servers is a good idea. You might also send it to me. If you have interesting ideas, I have no problem putting free stuff up on my site. lol.

I highly recommend Tripod from Lycos for free Web hosting.

http://www.tripod.lycos.com

I used Tripod for free for a couple of years, then I upgraded my account to $4.95 a month to get rid of popup ads and get more disk space and bandwith. I still have relatively inexpensive options to add more disk space and bandwith too if I ever need them.

You can even get your own pseudo-domain name as part of the free service, for example my site:

http://chillingtales.tripod.com

It's easy to use and set up, and I've never had any problems with the service.

We'll be addressing some of this in the ePublishing books we plan to release. But try this site: http://www.pdf995.com
Also, Adobe something on their website where you can submit your document and get it generated into a PDF online.

If it's not that popular or you don't promote it too much, then any old website will do. You ISP might even provide you your own space to make a small page for such a use. Else there are some free hosting locations out there - but they are filled with banners and popups.

To put it on the page though, just use a standard HTML link:

< a href= "filename.pdf" >View</a>

There are several providers out there that you could use to post your files. If you don't have any knowledge of HTML coding, Geocities.com, Angelfire.com, and possibly Tripod.com offer easy to use web page wizards. I, personally use Freeservers.com. Also, if you don't want to fiddle with the limits of the wizards, and don't know HTML, you can use Dreamweaver or Frontpage to make easy, quality pages.
