It depends upon how big and bright the thing you are looking at is, really.
Some posters have estimated 'big' distances, but the unaided eye, on a clear night, can see about 2.9 million lightyears(!!) Of course, you have to be looking at the Andromeda galaxy, but well...
On a more practical note, there have been some suggestions about how far you can see based upon your height. Presumably the same calculations could be used to get a decent estimate of how far away a big feature (like a mountain or pillar of fire) can be seen from?
