how have you amassed your D&D mini collection?

I only have a couple of boosters of D&D minis (I bought a ton of Heroquest minis a few years ago on ebay before the D&D minis came out) but I'm definitely on planning on getting some more (a lot more).

So to those with a sizable D&D mini collection, what's your preferred method of acquiring them? Amazon? Ebay? FLGS? Theft?

Ebay seems to be the best bet but is there a cheaper place to buy cases?

I have bought some of the WotC plastic mini's, but only the ones I want, and I don't buy plastic mini's that cost more than $5 - EVER.

I have accumulated about 200 or so, mostly monster singles and humaniod warbands - most for $1.50, $1, or less each.

Ebay might be useful to finish a set if you don't mind repeatedly wasting your money on shipping, or Max Mini's for trades, but these are the cheapest site's I have found for buying individuals:

http://www.thecardvault.com/

http://www.cardhaus.com/

The ENWorld RPG shop sells individuals too...

I'm not certain who would have the best deals on buying cases, or large numbers of boosters, as I don't buy them that way.

Goto maxminis and ask the question there. You'll get plenty of replies.

Depends on what you want. Lots of commons and uncommons for role playing? Trade a rare for 20 or so.

Cool rares - you'll need to start buying by the case if you can afford it, or just buy 10 or so boosters per set like I have and you'll eventually have a lot. I've also enjoyed some success trading books and magazines for minis, though that seems to be harder these days.

Also, some on-line places sell some of the commons for cheap prices. You can buy commons and uncommons from people in this site, or again, maxminis.com.

Sorry,

I can't find exact address, but if you want to trade minis there is a site for it.

Find a copy of MerricB's post on these boards - follow link to his homepage and there will then be a link to a trading page there :)

BTW I just got a horde of orcs, goblins and reptilefolk on ebay. Buying indivdual minis this way = too expensive. Usually just get them at game store when I get there and then swap with friends ;)

I've gotten probably over 300 minis from Ebay. In the long run, it's cheaper cuz I get what I want and I don't end up with a big pile of "crappy" minis. You just have to be picky with what you bid on and go for the deals. I also buy in bulk; winning single auctions from different sellers is crap. You've got to target a seller, then make all your purchases at once to maximize your returns and minimize S&H.

I usually buy a handful of boosters from my FLGS and fill in the singles I want from TheCardVault (.com). Only once have I paid for a rare single, but it was a figure that was fairly important to my campaign, so it was worth it. If you buy a bunch of sinlges (commons and uncommons), even with shipping you'll only be paying about $1 each.

Amazon:
I purchased my first WotC minis here. A Harbinger starter set for $8. Liked it. Later I purchased 2 GoL from them. Got a good price and junk for mini's (poor selection). Left a bad taste for Amazon and minis. I wont do that again.

Walden Books
I purchased one (1) GoL here. Huge Red Dragon. But, too rich for my wallet in the long run.

Ebay
Buy what I need, at the price I'm willing to pay. Good & Bad. Purchased my first case (Archfiends) off Ebay. It's my last as well. I'm just not that big of a collector. I wanted to pick up a few and sell off the rest and break even. :( Didn't work out that way.

MaxMini
I didn't have what people wanted. Had a few trades then got frustrated. I'm small potatoes.

Popular Collections dot com
Good selection, generally good prices .... when in stock.

I scarfed up as many Huge packs as I could find at Suncoast, when they were 25% off and it was a Replay weekend.

Otherwise, pick them up singly or in twos at FLGS and bookstore.
