How likely are you to use D&D for your next game?

  • We're using 5e now, and plan to continue

  • Our table will discuss 5e among other possible options

    Votes: 13 7.8%
  • We will be playing D&D, but use an older version (B/X, AD&D, 2e, 3e, 4e)

    Votes: 11 6.6%
  • We will be playing a variation on D&D (Pathfinder, Level Up, etc)

    Votes: 17 10.2%
  • We will be playing a retroclone version of D&D (OSE, OSRIC, etc)

    Votes: 5 3.0%
  • We will be playing another game and will not be using D&D or any of its variations

    Votes: 60 35.9%
  • Not sure. We need to talk in general about what we'll be playing next

    Votes: 10 6.0%
  • We will be trying 5e for the first time

    Votes: 1 0.6%
  • We will be playing a D&D-adjacent game (DCC, Shadowdark, etc)

    Votes: 19 11.4%

So, new Players Handbook, DMG and shortly the Monster Manual for 5e. Lots of alternatives for retroclones, variations and older editions. How likely are you to jump into D&D for your next game?

The system depends on what we want to play. Currently we're playing campaign set on the Sword Coast, so the 2014 5e was a good choice. If we're planning to do something with more dungeon crawls next maybe we play OSE, and there's a campaign we're planning to ressurect for a while that would be a good fit for testing the 2024 rules. But maybe we'll try something other than swords and sorcery RPGs and play Masks next.

The group I DM for just finished a year and a half long campaign last night. I'm taking a step back from the DM chair as I've been DMing weekly for about five years now, so what we do next depends on who steps in and what they want to run. One of my players has expressed some interest in running a Starfinder game, while another is super enthusiastic about running a 5e Theros game.

I think we're leaning towards the Theros game at the moment but we'll see. For the purposes of your question/this discussion, I'd say our group is open to trying other systems but remains primarily interested in 5e D&D. If we stepped away from 5e, it would be for another genre entirely, not for Pathfinder, an older edition of D&D, or any other high fantasy/sword and sorcery RPG.

The best thing of the DADHAT movie was that track from Tame Impala.

On 5.24E, im in a similar spot as I was in 2014 with 5E. Im in the middle of other long running games so its something im keeping an eye on, but wont be jumping into immediately. I likely will, at some point, give it a go, but I cant say when or rule out never.

At present I'm doubtful that there ever will be a next game. In light of recent conversations on a couple of other threads, I'm really not sure I'll ever feel confident returning.

But if I do, it's almost 100% sure that I'll use some version of D&D, be that the 2014 version, the 2024 version, or an eventual 6e, 7e, or later.

As one long-running (7+ years) campaign wraps up, we're planning to do the Pathfinder 2e Beginner Box next, then see what the group thinks. Either continue with PF2e or go back to 5e 2014. No plans to use the 2024 rules are this time.

Other long-running 5e campaign has a while to go still, but so far there's been zero interest in 5e 2024. Nobody has bought the new books.

My next game will likely be Level Up. If I had my way I'd love to run the Without Number series or ACKS II, but I don't have an OSR-loving group unfortunately.
