How long ago was the Bael Turath / Arkhosia war?

Add to this one more nugget of information from the Ecology of the Dragonborn article in Dragon #365:

"Eventually, the expanding borders of the fiendish kingdom of Bael Turath, ruled by tieflings and devils, collided with those of Arkhosia. ... War was inescapable. It came swiftly and brutally, and it spanned hundreds of years."

So, it might have started about 900 years ago, but it ended centuries later, possibly 700-600 years ago.

Good catch. I'm a bit surprised at that, I didn't think the war(s) lasted that long.

A bit more information from the Tiefling entry in Races and Classes:

"Neither empire would yield anything to the other. Border skirmishes grew with each passing year, sometimes breaking into full-scale wars, including the War of Teeth, the War of Wings, and the War of Ruin."

So it appears that the "war" was actually a centuries-long conflict comprising periods of relative peace and occasional full-scale wars - until the final one, of course.

awesome, I'd been looking for this information, in my game I had stated that Nerath fell 40 years ago, and then kept getting contradicted by fluff, so when I got asked about the dragonborn I was like, Wait till I can find it.

I am always amazed at how much fluff there actually is in the 4E books and E-Dragon.
The "trick" is it is never organized. You see a mention in this article, another in that one, a comment in a rule book. But you never have the "This is the 10,000 year timeline of Points of Light" and "These are the cultures of the Points of Light races."

That is annoying if you want a full overview. But it's great for triggering (at least my) inspiration. You don't lear a string of information that barely gives you time to process it, you read a little bit and can see what it inspires. And since you don't get the next "logical" piece of the story (as you would in a comprehensive guide), you can also explore different explanations, instead of immediately finding the "official" one.

And since it is never written down in one batch, you never feel like you are tied to what you read. If something contradicts a previous idea you had, well, you feel that it's unlikely someone else would noticed this particular spot or could refer back to it - accidentally (and thus misunderstanding a scene) or to "show you how you are wrong"...

Superb. Thank you, everyone!
Get the articles "Vor Kragal, the city of Ash", "Io'vanthor", "Ecology of the Dragonborn" and the adventure "Remains of the Empire". That ought to give everything you need to know.

I don't know if this was just me or if I read it anywhere, but IMC the Turathi made a pact with the devils to compensate the fact that their opposites (the Arkhosians) has dragons among them. It was as much out of desperation as it was out of ambition. Paints the tieflings as less "veeeeellaeeeeens".
