How long are your combats?

I was thinking about how long fights last. Typically they are over in a matter of seconds, ussually less then a minute when the partis are evenly matched.

On average how many rounds do your combats last in your games?

Longest fight ever...

...at least in my campaign.

An assault against a system of caves held by goblinoid rogues and rangers that turned into a protracted hit-and-run battle lasted for *twenty-nine* combat rounds... running, ducking, hiding, sniping, jockeying for position, bluffing, spellcasting, getting lost... it was fantastic! At least one attack die was rolled each round, so, that's a long battle! It came down to the wire, but the PCs won in the end and even managed to capture their at-the-time nemesis, a nasty female hobgoblin ranger with favoured enemy: human.

It was a blast!

A really long fight is about twelve rounds. Typically, more like two to six. It depends a lot on whether the fight comes all at once or in waves, and whether one side is prepared or not, too.

We've had combats that have lasted for well over 30 rounds. We are a relatively high level party (avg. 15) or so. Although some people feel that battles at this level tend to be quick and bloody, I must say that our combats involve a lot of hit and run tactics as well as a lot of defense.

Demons and Devils that we combat routinely use their Teleport abilities to escape when they're low on hit points and don't hesitate to summon help.
