How long is the typical tabletop session?

I used to never play less than 8 hours in a session, and 12 hours was the norm. As I got older, that began to mean I got to play only once every month or two. A few years ago, I found a new group and began playing one 4-hour session every Wednesday night instead. I've recently added two 2-hour online sessions each week (on Tuesdays and Thursdays) after my wife and kids are to bed.

My sessions are scheduled for 5 hours (7pm-midnight). We usually waste the first hour (I'm trying to solve that problem), and we usually run late until 12:30 at least.

Hm, groups here (i.e., locally) seem to be pretty typical in this regard. About 4-6 hours (I think 5-6 would be closer though) most often, but quite a few of maybe 8-10 hours - these are treasured opportunities. Then the exceedingly rare (nowadays) 12+ hour sessions.

Ah, to have few [other] time commitments again. . . :)

Wow, you must have a focused group to get anything done in that amount of time.
We get through a few encounters (3-4).

At first, I worried about having productive sessions, and then I figured as long as everyone was having fun, it didn't matter how much of the dungeon we got through in a given session.

Although EN World is generally not representative, so far, even here, it seems that WotC used good statistics when assuming a typical session will last 4 hours. I am quite impressed that so many people fall into the 4 hour range (though typically, it seems, 4 hours is the lower limit of the range).
