How long until 4.5E/5E?

Think about it. All of you "4E Fanboys" are just going to deal with yet another edition change come the year 2013. Why bother, really? Why let WotC dupe you?

If I stop buying new editions, it won't be because I feel I'm being "duped" by whatever edition is to follow. It'll be because I've found something that I really, really like, and the new version isn't looking better to me. But as it stands now, even though I like 3.5 and have invested quite a chunk of change into it, its burning me out with prep time, and combats are too micromanaged. As much as I hate to admit it, too many fiddly bits are killing my imagination. 3.5 is a player's dream, but a DM's job. If 4e can fix that, then WotC has me as a customer. If not, I still like 3.5 better than the older editions (though I still have a place in my heart for the boxed sets) so I'll keep with it. Nor can I blame a company for wanting to make a profit by keeping their sales fresh. I already have enough 3.5 books to play the next 50 years and never recycle material if I wanted. I highly doubt they could put out anything more that would be worth the paper, and i think WotC is well aware of the dwindling profit they can make from setting book#887 or race book #99, etc.

Change is inevitable. But some will no doubt stay with 3.5. Even I will likely continue my 3.5 campaign for at least the next year or so. But no one is forcing anyone to play the new edition du jour or forcibly burning 3.5 books. I think the frustration comes from those who see their stream of 3.5 products ending. But really, how much more could they make, and still make money? Last I checked, WotC wasn't Non-Profit. Sure, they could put new stuff out for 3.5, but I think there's a glut of stuff already. Besides, I'm sure some 3rd party publishers will keep the 3.5 dream alive thanks to the OGL.

If change means 4.5 comes out in 5-6 years, well then I'll take a look at it and see, instead of taking it as some personal slight against the gaming community or me individually, with the thought of "How dare they change MY game! Liars! Liars! I thought you loved me! How could you? You've changed too much to bear!" ***said as I clutch my dying PHB in my arms***

Now it's been 5 years since 3.5E, six once 4E is released. At this rate how long would it be until 5E is released?
I think this is a good aproximation.

I am going to bet on 2014 for 5e. My feeling is that we may not see a v4.5, but the suggestion that accelerating rate of technology may actually be accelerating the rate of change in D&D is why I think there is a definate possibility for 6 years instead of 8 this time.

5e will probably be implanted as a microchip directly into your brain, hehehe...

I count 5 years 2003 - 2008.

D&D XP, Feb 2007, RE:4E:

Aug 2007: D&D 4E announced for release in May 2008 with teaser books in the Jan timeframe.

How much should we trust WotC on these sort of announcements?

Yeah, this was pretty bad. My respect for them goes down a notch because of this.

I mean, how many thousands of dollars are sitting on people's shelves unused?

Well, it's hardly WotC:s fault if people don't use what they buy. I've got plenty of books I haven't used, and I've only got myself to blame.

And I expect to live another 30 years, so I've got plenty of time to use the books I have. But it is and will be my responsibility to take them down from the shelves and get them on the gaming table!

Not WotC:s.

I'm getting fatigued on this "release a new version every few years" model.
Perhaps you should play palladium then. They're pretty much the only big active RPG company that doesnt release new editions on a regular cycle.
