i bought all of these things. buying and buying and buying... seemed like a near ending cycle although it turned into a neverending one.

Did you even buy the lunch-box like "Fighter's Player Pack" and its Wizardly, Priestly and Thiefly brethren? :]

No, not those. I assumed you had those <grin>. I'm talking about the AD&D Player Packs.

Here's the blurb from page 15 of the 1994 TSR Catalog:

"For beginning players, the AD&D Player Packs present the ideal "all-in-one" package for their first AD&D game accessory purchase. The Fighter's, Wizard's, Thief's and Priest's Player Packs feature sleek, easy-to-carry plastic carrying cases filled with introductory AD&D accessories that make the game more enjoyable and make an impression on fellow players. Each case contains a Fighter's, Wizard's, Thief's, or Priest's Screen, three lead-free metal miniatures for the player's heroes, painting guides, an instruction book, seven dice, Character Record Sheets, a pencil, and more. Additionally, the case is sized to hold rulebooks and other game materials players will acquire over time."

Come to think of it, I've never actually seen one of these, so it is possible they were never released...

They were released. One of my ex-girlfriends' fathers had the wizard pack. They were kinda neat, but not really worth the money for an experienced player, IMO at least.
