I have 2 groups.

Group 1 has me + 4 players.

PHB = 2 (me + 1 player)
MM = 1 (me)
DMG = 1 (me)
Starter Set = 2 (me + 1 player)
HoDQ = 2 (me +1 player)
TRoT = 1 (me)
5E WoTC DM Screen = 1 (me)
ToD DM Screen = 1 (me)
Color printed copies of the free basic PDF = 3 (me + 2 players)

Group 2 has me + 2 players that are a couple, and one is my cousin. My cousin had his wife print out a b&w copy of the free basic PDF that they share.

I'm curious. How many have play-in-store groups and how many have play-at-home groups?

I wonder if people who play in stores feel the need to have their own books or the opposite.

I play in a group at home. I have only played at a store on three occasions: one was regular group with spotty attendance, and the other two of them were absolute nightmares.

The positive experience was a 4e group when Realms hit, so I tried out a Genasi swordmage and had a lot of fun with it. So much that I revisited the character as a Pathfinder inquisitor for the Jade Regent modules.

I'll share the nightmares in brief:
1) 4th edition. New players were forced to join with a massive level penalty, i.e. so far behind the group that the math didn't work anymore. Plus, the DM's tween son was in the group and dad was expressly making his character way way better than everyone else's.
2) Paladium Fantasy. The first sign this was going to be trouble was when the first action my character took was countermanded by the GM. But what killed the game was a player who insisted that she was not going to play a 1st level character, but a high level re-creation of Arwen...because out-of-character, the player believed she was Arwen from Lord of the Rings in a previous life. Half the players at the table were first-time players and sadly they probably stayed away from tabletop for the rest of their lives.

Yeah, just mine for my group. That said, have three starter sets, and three PHBs, 1 MM, 1 DMG, 1 HotDQ, 1 RoT, 1 DM Screen, 1 set of spell cards.

Our group has one of each book and a starter set.

In the past we would have had more books but we rotate games fairly often and have only so much money and while everyone enjoyed 5e its not a priority game for most of us, We all have the free basic PDF of course.

We really have little Pathfinder stuff either having only one book there either. We played a bit more Pathfinder than 5e but the SRD covers what we need. And in case anyone asks, I don't think the SRD effects sales. No one would have bought the books anyway since the limited hobby budget goes in a number of directions. Truth be known I've never seen a non core book option used anyway. The groups is not terribly interested in crunch.

...because out-of-character, the player believed she was Arwen from Lord of the Rings in a previous life.
It could happen.
