How many editions of Gamma World were made and which is the best?

Original Gamma World (1978) is the one true Gamma World. All other versions are pale imitations of the Real Thing.

God, I loved those freakish super-heroic mutated plants, animals, and humans. People thought 3rd edition characters had too many hit points? You rolled a die for every CON point you had!!!

One of my favorite "weird games" was a campaign an old high school buddy of mine ran with a mix of D&D, Boot Hill, and Gamma World, using the rules for conversion from 1st edition AD&D.

I played a kender with a telekinetic arm. FEAR ME!!!!!!!!

Yes, it's the 1st and 2nd edition my second-hand bookshop has. I might pick up the 1st edition just for fun.
If cost isnt an issue go ahead and get them both. 2nd Ed does do a good job of clarifying & smoothing out the rough spots of 1e.

There are times when "which is best?" isn't a very meaningful question, I think, and one of those times is discussing a game that's been through significantly different editions. Which is better, clam chowder, the color blue, or the Buggles' 2nd album? Well, it depends on what you want to do with it.

Damn. Beat me to it.

I'm guessing the one I had was 1st edition, but that one is the only one I've ever cared for.
