How many gamehours between levelling up

the avg was 1 real year per level. approx 900 hrs of roleplaying

I think it averaged out to about three levels a year for my first group (AD&D 1e). We met:

4-6 hours/session; 2 session/week; 50 weeks/year; 2.5 years (IIRC).

So, something like 205 hours per level (provided that my math isn't off too badly). I agree that leveling up seems to take place too quickly these days - but I find that this is usually a product of awarding experience in a manner other than those suggested by a given game, rather than of applying the rules as written.

Somewhere between 8 and 12 encounters.
We normally have 3 encounters a session and a session last 4 hours.
I would say we would average about 12 - 14 hours of gameplay per level up.

I'd say about 20-25 real hours of gaming per level in my 'normal' games.

My current experimental campaign is designed to be a lil faster, with several mechanisms to compensate for lower-level pcs and help them catch up.

Also, should the hours between levelling up increase as you increase in levels i.e. should levels 19 to 20 take way more than 15 hours?
In my experience as a player, at level 12+ there is a lot more planning involved each day of game time as well as in preparation for each adventure. There are more spell slots to fill, more options for adventures, and more types of gear to consider as one makes ready to tackle a challenge. The preparation alone can sometimes take as much time as the adventuring (at least if your group is as easily sidetracked as mine). Additionally, both combat and non-combat encounters tend to be more complex. It all works out to taking a little more time between levels, but I've never seen that as a problem as long as you're having fun with higher-level play.

Oh, and if you have a problem with the amount of game time (in years) vs. the time it takes a character to reach 20th-level, use training rules! But 900 hours...? diaglo, either you have the patience of a saint, or a lot less character ideas you want to use than I have running around in my head...
Sorry if this has been discussed before. This is my first post, and I can't see a search engine.
A lot of things have already been discussed here, but don't let that stop you from asking! These topics are hashed out constantly, and it's good to get some fresh opinions on the matter. And welcome to EN World!
