And of course, there is...
Big Image

Oh, how you rock. Let me count the ways. I've been wanting a clean image of that picture for a while now.

Now, can anyone tell me where to get a poster of it?

(Also - anyone notice that the map the guys in the bottom left are looking at is the Tomb of Horrors?)

The idol pic appears also on the original OAD&D DM's screen, but that was (IIRC) painted by DAT, also, so it's not exactly an homage.

I've seen it, too, on the game screen DeeDee used in an episode of Dexter's Laboratory, which I thought was a neat touch.

A parody of this cover but with teddy bear/ewok/"Little Fuzzy" creatures in place of the adventurers was in one of the "April Fool's" issues of Dragon back in the 80s (1987 -- issue 120?) and in typical TSR fashion was re-used a few more times after that -- as a cover to the TSR mail-order catalog and as a GenCon on-site program IIRC.

but i'm sure Tramp didn't model for the parodies.

A "Gen Con Special" issue of Polyhedron that was distributed in 1999 had a silver, black, and white cover painting homage to this classic image. I can't recall the artist, since it was before my time (even if it sounds like something I would do).

Dragon & Dungeon

Last year at GenCon, the final room in True Dungeon was that scene. They had a huge wall sized blow up of the idol, and an altar in front of it. If you took to long in the room, several lizard men attacked you.

Oh, you mean Teflon Billy? Yeah, that's what he's looking at. :)

Not a picture homage, but a theme homage:

In PirateCat's Of Sound Mind module there is a statue with tempting-looking gem eyes, and consequences if the PCs give in to temptation.
