D&D 5E (2014) How Many in your Group?

The game that I am currently running for has six players, plus a sub, who gets invited if anyone has to miss a session. This is pretty ideal for me for this game.

Two other groups that I am playing in both have nine players, with usually no more than seven showing up for any given session.

In my youth, I ran for a group that ranged from twelve to twenty. It was a super chaotic time, that I don't think I could easily keep up with now.

My group has remained at 6 players since 2008, plus myself. The group started in 1995 with 4 players, then grew to 12 between 2003 and 2006, shrunk back to 3-5 until 2008, when it reached its current composition. Since they are all lazy bastards, I've been the DM the entire time, save for a brief spell in 2001-2002.

3 of the current players have been with the group since 1995, 1 since 2003, and 2 since 2008. Earlier this year we started a secondary group with the remaining guy from the original 95 group, two from the 2003-2006 throng, and a fourth friend who had never played before.

7 players in one group. 5 in another but it seems we play the majority of the time down one or another. I run a group with 5 players, but that's 13th Age, not 5e.
