How many mini sets do you need to make them a useful part of your game?

I'm sticking to one case per set, and 1 starter per starter set. It's a fairly good amount of minis, enough so that I can represent any creature I can think of with something similar, but not so much that I can't afford it. After selling back my doubles of rares and a handful of commons and uncommons, I've spend about $150 for over 400 minis.
