I have a good amount of monster books, but I am amazed on how few you really need to make a great campaign. Middle Earth, for example, has only a handful (off the top of my head: balrog, orcs/goblins, giants, giant eagles, giant spiders, trolls, wraiths, wights, dragons, and whatever you call the flying beasts the wraiths rode).
I am trying to focus on creating a more realistic ecology in my campaign where every monster in the book(s) isn’t just stuffed in there somewhere while trying to get more mileage out of the monsters I use.
