How many of you came close to selling off your stuff?

Once, in the "dark days" of TSR when the lights nearly went out. I figured TSR was producing crap for years and now this. I still have my stuff, though.

That would be akin to selling children. :p

I'd wager that most gamers book collection weigh more than their children weigh.

I've been gaming for almost 18 years. I had ton of books...all of the Editions of D&D--except for the 1974 version. I had a bunch of modules, supplements, Dragon and Dungeon Magazine. I had a goodish collection of White Wolf stuff. I still have MERP/ROLEMASTER and WFHP. I have dice, miniatures, and terrain gallore.

And then one day, just a few months ago, I looked at my huge collection and thought
"Dear God, I've probably spent at least $8,000 on this "hobby"...and where has it gotten me?" The answers and thoughts to that question terrified me. Now, $8,000 over a period of 18 years equals about $444 a year. Which actually sounds about right!
What's worse is that I might be moving soon and move all of that "stuff."

That saying is right on: "The more stuff you own the more stuff ends up owning you."

So I've starting selling the stuff that I don't find cool or haven't used in years. The first stuff to go was a bunch of 3.0/3.5 third party books, followed by 3.0 "splat" books and even the 3.0 core rules. I kept asking myself "When will I use this?" If the answer was "probably not ever" then the item came up for sale.

This was soon followed by 2nd Edition books that I hadn't even glanced at in years: most of the "Complete" Series, some modules and the like.

And then went some of the non-D&D stuff: Vampire, Mage The Ascension, the old version of WHFP, and so on.

I made some "okay" money...better than what I've seen on ebay where huge lots of D&D books go for really cheap.

And you know what? I've discovered that I do not even miss this stuff. In fact, I've extended this philosophy to my book collection and other aspects of my life.

I never sold any of my D&D stuff (not even 2E!), but I sold off a bunch of other stuff:

Tunnels & Trolls
Chivalry & Sorcery
Stormbringer
Hawkmoon
Ringworld
Superworld
Champions
Villains & Vigilantes
James Bond 007
Top Secret SI
Star Trek (Fasa)
Chill
The Morrow Project
Paranoia
Traveller 2300
Twilight 2000
BattleTech
MechWarrior
SpaceMaster
CyberSpace
Car Wars Deluxe
Mage: The Ascension
Mage Dark Ages
Vampire: the Masquerade
Bushido

I regret getting rid of The Morrow Project and Stormbringer, but haven't missed the rest. Stuff that survived the purge:

OD&D (OCE)
Holmes
B/X
BECMI
RC
OAD&D
AD&D 2E
3.0
Arcana Unearthed
Mutants & Masterminds
True20
Lejendary Adventure
Call of Cthulhu (BRP)
Call of Cthulhu (d20)
Behind Enemy Lines (Fasa)
Rolemaster (classic)
MERP
Castles & Crusades

SELL.....Gaming Books....

huhwha?

I just can't wrap my brain around that idea.

Why yes, I AM a packrat. Why do you ask?

In 2003, I sold everything I had with the exception of my Call of Cthulhu rulebook

What was sold? My complete D&D collection dating back to 1980 (1e, 2e and 3e, core books + splats and modules), my Metzger Basic & Expert sets + modules, the complete line of Werewolf (both editions + splats + Wild West) and Mage:Revised, some Call of Cthulhu, my complete 3.0 collection (all splats and the original adventure path), 150 dragon magazines, some Battletech supplements, and about two dozen ShadowRun books. Oh, and all my Unspeakable Oath and White Wolf Magazines. I'm sure I'm forgetting some stuff, but I ended up shipping four *large* boxes.

I sold it *all* as a single lot, to a single seller. Honestly, I'm a little surprised it wasn't one of you. ;)

(edit: since then, I've purchased the 3.5 core books and three supplements, a few hundred D&D miniatures, and the Unisystem titles All Flesh Must Be Eaten and Buffy Revised. That's my entire collection, and it should serve me for the next thousand years.

Came close to selling most of my collection just after 3.0 came out.
But it seemed the market dropped out and it wouldn't be worth it.

Financially, if it was worth it I would contemplate selling 2E stuff and all my Kalamar stuff if it was worth it but the prices I see on ebay aren't really worth it.

Extremely close... I couldn't find/form a new group to save my life. As luck would have it just before I sold everything on E-Bay I was contacted by a few people and we are having our first game tonight.

I have sold off or given away all of my gameing stuff twice in the past. Both times I had gotten so burned out on playing that even having the stuff in the house agrivated me to no end.

No I don't regret doing it ether time. I needed the time away from gameing for my own mental health. It was also the times where I made the choice to be in more social activites (aka parties, group functions, etc).
