How many of your use the 22 point buy in the phb?

Do you use the 22 point buy system in the phb for your 4e games?

  • Yes. 22-point buy is balanced for a reason.

In one of my 3.x games, we rolled. Then one of my players confessed to having rolled 65,000 times (using a program, and, no, I'm not kidding) to get the stats he wanted. Which, IMO, defeats the purpose of rolling the dice. Why not just use point buy?

So for my 4e game, that's what we did, 22-point buy and it's working quite well so far.

So I have to ask . . . what stats did he end up with?

To try out 4th, I created 4 5th-level pregens and ran my group through the recent "Heathen" adventure from Dungeon.

I used the standard array of 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10. The PCs are human cleric (devoted), halfling rogue (trickster), elf wizard (control), and dwarf fighter (great weapon).

No one is complaining about their characters being underpowered. As a DM I think they are very balanced with the difficulty of 5th-level encounters.

They have struggled with groking working as a team, vs. working as individuals on one side vs. the enemy on the other side.

I finally had to point out that the fighter and rogue need to flank the biggest threat (threat analysis is very important!), the wizard needs to enable that and keep everyone else away, and the cleric needs to stay close to keep everyone buffed and alive.

It's now my strong, educated opinion that your ability scores don't matter nearly as much as your party composition and teamwork.

Using the basic. I personally like the default array, but some of my PC opted for point buy.

I feel really bad for my eladrin wizard; he bought a 16 in dex and int (raised to 18) and put a par of 10's in str/con. He's soooooo going to die a fortitude-induced death...
