Our group has played with 2 characters per player for 20 years. Generally our group consists of the GM and three players, so 2 characters per player gives us enough to cover the general range of classes/skills needed. We have also found it good for two of us who had extensive acting backgrounds back in school as it gives us the ability to roleplay two different personalities at once, sometimes in contention with each other.

Generally it's 1 per, but there have been exceptions. My current campaign began with 2 players running 2 characters each. As new players joined, the extra PCs were whittled away.

Even in my solo game I only play one PC. Though he does have an improved familiar who helps out and a bunch of allies he has made through roleplay and circumstance.

Back when I only had 2 or 3 players I would have them play 2 apiece but never more than that.
Since 3E my group has had 4 or more players so I haven't had anyone play more than one character at a time. I would rather no one did if I can keep it that way.

Since 2e, it's been 1 Player, 1 character. But back in the 1e and classic D&D days, we would have multiple characters, but only one in play at a time. Back then, everything was so new and exciting that we couldn't possibly decide on what to play.

In my current campaign, I've asked each player to create three PCs. The PCs are merged, so they only play one at a time, but they have to track and manage all three. And to make things worse, they are each using different game systems!

I usually run 2 PCs at once (usu. by cohorts), but sometimes more. And since I am often a necromancer or summoner, I often have to control multiple characters in battle. I try to get everything done in advance to ensure a minimal delay when it is my turn.

In our last D20 campaign everyone had 2 PCs. Only one was played in any given adventure, but between sessions it was possible to switch out. Of course part of this related to our house rule that it took a month of "downtime" training to raise up a level.

This worked very well for our group, but it's not for everyone.
