Right now I have 2 players who are both using 2 PCs. The only time there has been any lending or borrowing of weapons was when a bludgeoning weapon was passed up to a fighter in the front of the group to deal with some skeletons in a narrow hallway. Otherwise there is little or no sharing other than what is common when everyone has only 1 PC. But then I have always had a group that divided wealth based on what was best for the group rather than everyone trying to get their share. Roleplaying is working out just fine as well as the 2 PCs trade off the spotlight. And neither of my players would ever "kill off" a PC to get to make a new one. If they were unhappy with a PC we would work something out to replace it. I dont go for the "play that one until its dead" mindset, but then I have never had an abuse of it.

Giving each player a cohort wouldn't be bad in many circumstances. It could solve some of the "splitting the party" problems; if the group needs to split in half each player takes one of the characters.

I voted "2 at a time" but your poll doesn't have an option to cover what we really do: multiple PC's in the campaign of which up to 2 are in a party at a given time. Players cycle PC's in and out of the party between adventures if they want.

Our average party size (not counting rescuees etc.) is about 10-12 in a 1e-based game; this is much easier to do in 1e than 3e, as there's less bookkeeping per character.
