Another thing to consider, how many groups of 4 people set out to be adventurers and didn't make it back alive? That could keep the population down and the graveyards full for the next generation of adventurers to go try and loot.

Aye, but in those cases, you'd just have memorial markers in the village, if anything...the actual bodies would have been lost/eaten/reanimated in the nearby Caves of Chaos.
