I'm curious about the processes people use for such high volume. How many people do you have working on this? A few authors, an artist or two, a layout person, all in assembly line style? Or is it possible for just one person to put out such a high volume solo?
Our company was born in March of this year. We've got off to such a rip-roaring start that both my partner, Sean, and I keep figuring out - in the nick of time - oh, right 'we need an editor for this, quick' or 'hey did you get an artist yet for this?'. Hehe, I thought it would be easy...
I don't think it's possible for one person to put out a high volume unless that person has a partner or spouse who's bringing home money for the household, therefore affording the start-up publisher time to bury himself/herself in their work. Even then, I don't think any one can produce too successfully in a vacuum. A personal project, perhaps - something one's been working on for a while. But product after product needs other minds to stay fresh.
I do all of the layout for Dog Soul's books - for this year, that makes up most of what our profit will be. I just finished a book for Emerald Press where I wrote most of it, did the layout, and did a good portion of the art. *tear rolls down cheek*
I never wanna do that again!
Dog Soul's aiming to put out about fifteen books this year, and we're not going to have a whole year to do it, obviously. I just ran some ads on this site and a couple of others looking for writers and artists, and we've been lucky as hell to have attracted talented people who work fast!
