How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

In all seriousness, "Trap the Soul" seems like your best bet. If you put it on an item and trick him into accepting it, there's no saving throw and no applicable spell resistance. Because he's not dead, he can't be brought back to life.

Then dispose of the soul-gem in some suitably dramatic and permanent manner.

It only takes one... provided that the one wizard in question is Elminster himself, and he decides to suicide.

Otherwise, forget it.

You cannot kill Elminster.

Regardless of how hard you hit him, he will be back at full health in the next edition of the Forgotten Realms.

So Elminster, as statted out in the FRCS, is pretty tough. However, if I was a villain with access to mid- to high-level flunkies who wanted to take out the pipe-smoking bastard, how would I want to go about it?

Send in a bunch of teleporting wizards who all cast hideous laughter on him? Nah, he's probably got mind blank. Okay, one guy who readies to cast antimagic shell, and a bunch of people with pointy sticks?

What are your ideas?

Those minions have to be able to kill a deity. If anything happens to El, Mystra will come running to save him.

Hire Raistlin.

Take a mid- to high-level monk, give him a Ring of Spell Storing with Anti-magic Field and Teleport. A Belt of Battle is nice, but not required.

1) Teleport next to him
2) Anti-magic Field
3) Grapple

T-A-G, he's out.

He gets a caster level check to escape with his Elminster's Evasion Spell (the ultimate Mary Sue trick)... at least if you're using something somewhat similar to the 2e version. (This causes me to wonder just how Khelben died... won't he just come back?)

Instead of attacking him directly... start a negative advertising campaign on him. The realms have never seen anything like it before... Soon enough everyone will start to despise Elminster the kitten smashing, old lady shoving, girlfriend hitting on, home team hating, king's bounty pilfering jerk, and you won't have to worry about him meddling...

No one will want his help.

Actually, that's a pretty good idea. . . though I'd crank it up a notch. I'd have my evil flunkies actually go out and commit carefully planned evil deeds -- while masquerading as Elminster. This way, not only will many people not want the old fart's help, they may very well muster some high-level forces to smite him.

I don't think you have any idea how powerful Elminster really is. Let me provide an example by ranking the following power levels from weakest to strongest.

6) Gods of the Forgotten Realms.
5) Ao
4) Ed Greenwood
3) TSR
2) WotC
1) Elminster

Enemy wizards w/AMF + tons of beatstick-fighters might have a chance. Elminster has Epic spells, which (IIRC) have a 50% chance of working inside an AMF. All he needs to do is get lucky and epic-port outside the AMF and rain destruction down with a quickened-Meteor Swarm or something.

FR isn't known for a great many uber-fighters... El is probably a better swordsman than any of the non-named fighters in the Realms.

Artemis Entreri with a AMF would have a good chance of dropping him though. Maybe.

edit: who am I kidding? Entreri couldn't even drop Drizzt... :p El Wins.
