How many wizards does it take to screw in a lightbu- I mean, kill Elminster?

I do not think the chosen of Mystra have to sleep. I also think that he is not so lonely.

It has been a while since I have been active with the realms, but as far as I remember he and the Symbol were lovers and so were he and Mystra. He is kind of 'the' high profile jiggalo IYKWIMANTYD. :D

Couldn't a Wish strip that spell off of him?

Not without in-character knowledge of the fact that it is, in fact, a single spell that provides Eliminster with this death-cheating ability (you'd have to wish that this specfic spell not function, as simply wishing him dead would just trigger the spell in question). In other words, no, not without players cheating ;)

I'd call that spell cheating, but 3.5's dimensional anchorkicks that spell in the nuts.

Dimensional Anchor
Abjuration
Level: Clr 4, Sor/Wiz 4
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Effect: Ray
Duration: 1 min./level
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: Yes (object)

A green ray springs from your outstretched hand. You must make a ranged touch attack to hit the target. Any creature or object struck by the ray is covered with a shimmering emerald field that completely blocks extradimensional travel. Forms of movement barred by a dimensional anchor include astral projection, blink, dimension door, ethereal jaunt, etherealness, gate, maze, plane shift, shadow walk, teleport, and similar spell-like or psionic abilities. The spell also prevents the use of a gate or teleportation circle for the duration of the spell.

A dimensional anchor does not interfere with the movement of creatures already in ethereal or astral form when the spell is cast, nor does it block extradimensional perception or attack forms. Also, dimensional anchor does not prevent summoned creatures from disappearing at the end of a summoning spell.

Don't kill Elminster! It seems he's the only thing that's left of the Realms, with everything killed, destroyed, or otherwise FUBARed.

According to a preview of 4e, Mystra is set to die (death by Cyric!) in 1385. With her gone, El doesn't have much time left. Legions of angry PCs will rip him to shreds, even if it's not strictly canon.

Seems a lot of his power and immunity comes from being the Chosen of Mystra.

Perhaps try and drive a wedge between the two of them.

IIRC, they are lovers?

If so, that'd be a great target. Perhaps even the old 'hire a floozy to pick him up in his favorite bar'?

Pun-pun. It's that easy.

But I think Raistlin could take him, so I'd send Raistlin after him.

2001 April's fool issue of Dragon, nodwick strip. Raistlin couldn't do it, not even by using 8th edition rules...

(One of the best nodwick strips ever, even though he gets bvlasted on the second panel orso)

EL has had many different lovers through out his really, really long life. I do not think the jealousy thing is going to work so well. If that was really an issue I think that the Symbol would be the one smacking the tawdry wenches about. She has quite the temper you know. ;)

But yea. If you could somehow provide for a way to strip him or interrupt his chosen status that would give you the best chance. Perhaps someone could pull a Karsus? That would do it at least for a little bit. :)

That alone might allow most 'conventional' tactics work.

Sure. But why would you cast Dimensional Anchor unless you knew about Elminster's ostensibly secret spell? There simply doesn't seem to be a reason that doesn't involve "I read about Elminster's stats as a player and want to apply that metagame knowledge in actual play!"
